Albert Fitch Bellows

American Painter, (Born: Milford, Massachusetts, 1829 – Died: Auburndale, MA 1883) Lived in New York.

Albert Fitch Bellows: An outstanding nineteenth century American landscape artist, A. F. Bellows first studied architecture. He accepted the post of Principal of the New England School of Design, Boston, remaining there from 1850 to 1856. Bellows then resigned to complete his studies first in Paris and then in Antwerp at the Royal Academy. A. F. Bellows was elected to the Royal Society of Painters in Belgium several years later. Upon his return to the United States he lived and worked mainly in Boston until the great fire of 1872, in which his studio and much of his work was destroyed.

  During the last decade of his life, Albert Fitch Bellows opened a very successful studio on Fourth Avenue in New York. It was at this time that he devoted much of his time to the original art of etching, becoming a member of the New York Etching Club, the Philadelphia Society of Etchers and the prestigious Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers, London, England. Albert Fitch Bellows was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1859 and a full member in 1861.

 

Albert Fitch Bellows is best known as a watercolor painter of New England landscapes and a pioneer in that medium. He was born November 29, 1829 in Milford, MA and took up the study of painting in Boston. He was principal of the New England School of Design from 1850 to 1856. Bellows studied in Paris and Antwerp from 1856 to 1858. Upon his return to America he settled in NYC, where he gained recognition as a figure painter before turning to landscapes. He visited Europe again in 1867-68.

Henry Alken (1785 - 1851), British. Henry Alken is the best-known member of a family of Danish sporting artists who settled in Britain. A prolific painter and watercolorist of hunting, coaching and shooting scenes, Alken produced a famous series of aquatint prints.

Framed / Matted Engravings by H. Alken.

 There are two Prints in each frame, double matted with Glass front.

1st. set is: “A Stage Coach” (Going to the left) and below it is “A Four In hand” (Also going to the left).

2nd  set is: “A stage coach” (Going to the right) and “London Royal Mail”. (Also going to the right)

They both have Certifications of Authenticity 52 on the back. With Item No. 1199-1 and 1199-2 It states, “A fine Quality Restrike engraving from England. This Print was hand printed from the centuries old original plate. It has been expertly hand colored with the finest watercolors in the style and manner practiced in the eighteen Hundreds.”
